Top 5 Ways You're Missing the Mark on Inclusivity in Your Community

Writer: Molleigh PompilioMolleigh Pompilio

It’s time to rethink the way we are defining “inclusivity” in our chapters. We all get the question, whether it’s during recruitment, from an advisor, or even someone outside of the fraternity/sorority life community- “Is your sorority inclusive, how so?”

It’s a fair question when you think about it. The entire premise of a sorority is founded on an exclusionary history that many people still choose not to think about. But that is just not going to get the job done anymore.

While there are a million and one different things to consider in keeping our chapters and communities an inclusive and welcoming environment, here are a couple to think about.

  1. Take A Look At That Calendar - When setting out for calendar planning, many people often start by blocking off the basic, more traditionally celebrated holidays. Recognizing and celebrating different cultural and religious holidays helps all members feel seen and valued. Plus, what a fun way for members to learn and celebrate with their sisters!

  1. Rethink Financial Accessibility - Dues and event costs can be barriers. Yes, we can offer great payment plans, scholarships, or status for members who may need it. But what about those pesky fines for missing events? Or the extra cost associated with going on the retreat? Stop for a second and think - maybe she missed that mandatory event because she had to work so she can afford dues. Or maybe her scholarship money is late and that retreat is not in the budget. As a leader, thoughtful insight can go a long way.

  1. Make Accessibility a Priority - Are your events, chapter meetings, and spaces truly accessible to everyone? Think about physical accessibility, sensory-friendly environments, and virtual participation options for those who need them. Knowing how to best support your members will keep them engaged and retained.

  1. Language is Everything - We all can be guilty of “speaking Greek.” The endless acronyms, the nicknames, or the completely made-up nonsense that we call things in our organizations. To someone outside of our circle, hearing nothing but these types of phrases or conversations can be extremely isolating. Think about your audience, keep it simple, and help educate those around you on the amazing things your community does.

  1. Foster A Culture of Belonging - Inclusivity isn’t just about recruiting diverse members—it’s about making sure everyone feels like they truly belong. Encourage sisters to build relationships outside their usual friend groups through intentional pairings and small group activities. Celebrate a variety of achievements beyond academics and leadership to recognize the unique contributions of all members. Small efforts like these help ensure every sister feels valued, heard, and at home in your sorority.

Creating an inclusive sorority experience requires continuous reflection and intentional action. By making small but meaningful changes, we can build a community where every member feels valued, supported, and truly at home.
